I don't really know why St. Patrick's Day is celebrated and know it is just a huge beer drinking, partying day at least here in Des Moines.
But for us it is an excuse to dress up, eat green food, go to a parade, and spend time with friends. We have had super fun St. Patrick's days while being in Iowa.

The Des Moines St. Patrick's Day parade is a 2 and 1/2 hour long parade,
we stayed for about 2 hours and the kids loved every minute, especially the candy.
